Despite the state-of-the-art safety mechanisms that Volvos claimed to be having, the BMTC’s favourite trump card had a mighty fall on Tuesday, when a Volvo bus lost control and ran over several people, killing three.

However, BMTC officials on Tuesday decided to wait and watch before making statements regarding Volvos’ safety mechanism. “It is too premature, we do not want to rush to conclusions regarding the safety aspect of the bus. We are receiving conflicting reports from eye witnesses about the accident. Some believe it was brake failure, though I do not think this could have been the case. I cannot even blindly blame the driver - he has been with us for 22 years and has an excellent track record. As the bus was burnt, it is difficult to identify the real trigger. Our engineers will work through the night analysing the chassis, to identify the cause of accident,” said P S Sandhu, Director, Safety and Vigilance, BMTC.

BMTC General Manager Hemaraju said that crucial questions related to the accident can only be answered after the officials receive the Global Positioning System (GPS) report on Wednesday.

According to a BMTC official, Volvo drivers were trained for 15 days before being put on the job.
