The tragic accident at HAL had a cascading effect on the entire homebound crowd of IT professionals, who were stranded in their offices on Monday evening. With utter chaos prevailing on the arterial Airport Road (AR), several companies cancelled their evening shuttles, forcing the employees to stay put at the workplace.

Some like Accenture diverted its buses through the circuitous Koramangala route to avoid AR, which was clogged with traffic. Symphony Services posted mails to employees about the accident, cautioning them against taking that route; the bus departures were delayed by over two hours.

Employees of ITPL-based Mysis had to struggle through narrow lanes as the main link to HAL was closed by the police.

The rumours had circulated thick and fast, much before the news of the Volvo running amok started making headlines on TV channels.

“I heard that 25 people were killed, and several injured. I thought the accident was really, really big,” said Arijit, an IT professional working at Marathahalli.

Alok, an Accenture staffer, said he received information that the Volvo had toppled over several autorickshaws and bikes, killing many motorists and pedestrians.

The situation returned to near normal late Tuesday evening when the police reopened the road for vehicles.
