BANGALORE: The woes of road users in the City Market area are set to end soon. The re-laying of Silver Jubilee Park (SJP) Road with concrete surface is nearing end, and the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) hopes to throw the stretch open by the end of this month.

The SJP Road has been shut to traffic for the last few months after the City Corporation decided to re-lay it as it had become unfit for use.

The work, which initially faced some delay, has been progressing for the last three months after BMP Commissioner K Jairaj took interest in its early completion.

According to BMP officials, the major portion of the work is over and only small portions remain, which should be over in two weeks.

The State-owned Land Army Corporation has been handling the Rs 2.6 crore SJP Road project, a major part of which is concreting the 710-metre stretch from Hotel Chandra Bhavan in the Market area to Dasappa Hospital. Once completed, 21-metre wide road will have provision for six lanes.

One lane will go for parking and another exclusively for buses. The rest will be for general traffic. Besides, the road will also have space for pedestrians and public toilets, officials said.

“Once open, the SJP Road will be one of the best roads in the City,” said Karnataka Hardware Association president B K Goyal, who was coordinating with BMP, BWSSB, BSNL, Bescom and the Land Army Corporation.

He had petitioned the authorities about the miserable condition of the road and the health problems the dust on the road was causing to shopkeepers, while urging them to take up repair work immediately.

“In fact, this is the only project where locals worked hard and coordinated with all the departments,” Goyal said.

Meanwhile, the BMP also has ideas to extend the concrete surface up to Town Hall junction by covering the 200-metre stretch from Dasappa Hospital to Town Hall.

But the authorities have not yet taken a decision on it as its present condition is good.
