Bangalore: An electric crematorium was inaugurated at Peenya on Sunday.

The crematorium stands on the earlier burial ground on Tumkur Road.

Built on a two-acre plot, the new electric crematorium has two furnaces and two waiting halls.

Outside the main building, a place to conduct rituals has been constructed. Parking space for vehicles is available.

Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has guaranteed 440 watts of power to the crematorium. A generator has also been put in place.

The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will charge Rs. 50 for cremations.

Sanctioned under the Mega City project, work on the crematorium began on May 2004 and was supposed to have been completed in the next 18 months. But due to "several problems" work on the Rs. 2.44-crore project was delayed.
