Nearly 20,000 people submit applications for post of police constable

BANGALORE: Traffic was affected near the Vidhana Soudha, Balekundri Circle and GPO Circle for nearly three hours on Monday as thousands of people thronged the offices of Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East) on Bhagwan Mahaveer Road to submit applications for the post of constable.

As it was the last day for submitting the applications, there was heavy rush at the Commissioner's office. Following the scramble, senior police officials decided to issue the applications at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police situated in front of Hotel Olympus and collect the filled forms at the Commissioner's office.

As the long queues stretched across, Bhagwan Mahaveer Road, Dr. Ambedkar Veedhi, Queen's Road and even touched Cunningham Road, vehicular movement was affected near the busy Balekundri Circle and Coffee Board junction. This led to traffic snarls in the surrounding areas. The police had a tough time in regulating traffic as well as controlling the applicants who tried to jump the queue.

After collecting application forms, hundreds of youths and women squatted on the pavement on Bhagwan Mahaveer Road, Queen's Road and Cunningham Road to fill the forms.

Hundreds of them were seen filling the application forms at Cubbon Park. According to an estimate, around 20,000 people submitted applications on Monday for 3,500 vacancies at counters set up at the Commissioner's office on Monday. Applications were invited for about 3,500 posts of constables in the city police unit and City Armed Reserve (CAR), in addition to some 450 posts of women constables. Nearly four lakh people have reportedly submitted their applications.
