Protest against felling of trees at GKVK campus

Protest against felling of trees at GKVK campus

Yet another green space — the GKVK campus — is being invaded in the city to make way for a 100 feet road that will connect MS Palaya to Bellary Road (NH7) and the international airport. To protest against the proposed plan to cut down on the green cover, concerned residents and green lovers are taking to the streets on Saturday.
The protest is against the road that has been "okayed" to come up within the GKVK campus. People fear that not only would the green cover be lost, but also the research activities might get affected.
The protestors plan to start the march at 7.30 am outside the main gate of GKVK walking all the way to Columbia Asia on Bellary road. "From there, we plan to disburse and assemble again at Vidhan Soudha," said Bharath, immediate past president, Rotary Yelahanka. From Vidhan Soudha, the group plans to march all the way to Raj Bhavan and meet the governor.
The group demands that an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) be done in compliance of legal requirements for forest areas and a serious evaluation of alternatives be undertaken in consultation with stakeholders and environmentalists before taking a final decision.
