Panel’s suggestion to check traffic density in CBD

BANGALORE: The Bangalore City Road Safety Committee has asked the State Government not to allow any further increase in the floor area of commercial or office buildings situated within a radius of 4 km from the Vidhana Soudha.
This is among the suggestions made to prevent increase in traffic density in the Central Business District (CBD) of the city, at the meeting of the committee members on Friday.
The committee includes representatives of the city police, the Transport Department, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Bangalore Development Authority, Forest Department and other civic agencies.
Inspection
Deliberating on the increase in traffic, the committee members felt the need for a joint inspection by the traffic police, the BBMP engineering wing and Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force of commercial buildings which had a floor area of more than 10,000 sq ft. If there was any deviation or misuse of parking area, steps should be taken to restore the area for parking and penalty should be imposed.
The committee had a detailed discussion over the problem of shifting electricity poles and transformers that are obstructing traffic from roads.
It was decided to ask the KPTCL to shift the poles and transformers hindering the traffic movement, without accepting money from any agency.
The KPTCL was asked to get the charges reimbursed from the Infrastructure Cess Fund maintained by the Urban Development Department.
The meeting also deliberated on the need to have more space for protestors than the allotted area at the proposed Freedom Park coming up on the Old Central Prison premises. The BBMP has been asked to reserve a minimum of 15 acres as “agitation ground” as against 2.22 acres, which was inadequate. The BBMP has been asked to provide toilet and drinking water facilities at the ground.
