Rly station in Blore to be made world-class
DH News Service, Bangalore:
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the Railways Ministry of China with the Railway Board in New Delhi to develop Byappanahalli into a world-class railway station.
This follows an inspection of the station by a high-level delegation from China a month ago, said General Manager (GM), South Western Railway, Praveen Kumar.
Briefing the media at the City railway station after declaring open an ‘Aam Aadmi Water Vending Machine’ on Platform 8, Kumar said the Chinese were now working on a suitable design for the station.
With the City station and Yeshwantpur reaching saturation limits, Byappanahalli is now being looked at as the next terminus in Bangalore.
R’nagaram-Mysore
On the slow pace of progress made by the doubling of track between Ramnagaram and Mysore, the GM lashed out at non-cooperation from different agencies of the Government.
“If every department wants to demand its pound of flesh, then progress cannot be made,” he charged. Work has come to a standstill on one stretch, a 93-km line between Ramnagaram and Mysore, as the Archealogy Department has not given clearance for the construction of a major bridge there, Kumar said.
The line passed through a Tipu Armoury at Srirangapatna, which is a heritage site.
“Only if we get clearance from the government, can any progress be made,” he added.
The Water Vending Machine is a novel initiative by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Department.
25 more machines
One needs to insert a one-rupee coin into it and hold a cup below the tap to receive pure water. There are plans to introduce 25 more machines in the station after assessing the success of this model.
SECURITY TIGHTENED
In the wake of threats received at the City railway station in the aftermath of the blasts that rocked Bangalore over two months ago, security has been tightened in a big way, said Senior Security Commissioner of Railway Police Force, B B Mishra.
Speaking to newspersons after a function organised to inaugurate a water vending machine at the station, Mishra said eight armed men with sophisticated weaponry were guarding the City station round-the-clock.
“They have been brought from Dhanbad in Bihar and are checking people entering and leaving the station,” he said. In addition to that, barricades have been put up in several points in the station to ensure that open areas were sealed.
Four sniffer dogs, two at City and one each at Yeshwantpur and Cantonment railway station, were pressed into service to improve security in trains. “These dogs are made to walk along the platform to cover the entire length of the train so that they can detect any suspicious object,” he added. All parcels arriving and leaving the City and two-wheelers being despatched through trains are also being subjected to strict scrutiny, Mishra added.
