Vehicles To Ply On Both Sides Even After Metro Work Starts

Bangalore: Traders on CMH Road found some respite on Tuesday, after the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) assured them that vehicular movement on the road won’t be completely blocked for Namma Metro work.
BMRC officials, while interacting with traders who resorted to a roadblock against proposed traffic restrictions, said vehicles will be allowed on both sides of the road, even after work on the Metro starts.
Earlier, traffic police had proposed a ban on vehicles on one stretch of the road (from Adarsha theatre to 100 Feet Road junction) after the road is barricaded. Imtiaz Ahmed, president, CMH Road Shops and Establishments Association, said traders have been assured that work would be taken up in phases which would affect traffic movement partially.
The Namma Metro work on CMH Road was expected to commence last month but is yet to take off due to delay in shifting utilities and concerns over possibilities of work hitting traffic movement on the road. While traders welcomed the decision to allow traffic on the road during the project work, they maintained they would continue to fight the Namma Metro alignment proposed on the road.
Early days, says BMRC
BMRC officials said it’s still early days to discuss traffic restrictions on the road because the shifting of utilities is only in the initial phase. “We’ll barricade the middle portion of the road for construction of the pier foundations, but 3-4 metres of road will be available on both sides,’’ an official said.
Since the road width varied through the entire stretch, the available road space would also vary. Discussions with traffic police were on to decide how to man traffic after work commences. “Barricades will be put up after utilities are shifted. Traffic movement can be discussed only after that,’’ he said.
