The city’s fathers have forgotten the city’s founding father. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has failed to observe Kempe Gowda Day, that is usually celebrated in all 100 wards during Karaga celebrations in March or April.

BBMP officials claim that they are still waiting for a date from the Governor’s office when, in fact, the Governor’s office had sent a letter to the BBMP asking it to wait until the formation of the popular government.

The BJP government led by B.S. Yeddyurappa was installed on May 30.

Kempe Gowda Day has been celebrated every year since 1949 in memory of the founder of Bengaluru.

The mayor plays a key role in the celebrations and the BBMP head takes over in the absence of a mayor. A procession with the “Kempe Gowda Jyothi” is taken to the four towers built by Kempe Gowda II to mark the boundaries of his capital city and is received by the mayor. Artistes in traditional attire participate in the processions, the entire city wears a festive look and performances of traditional folk arts like janapada jatre, dollu kunitha, veeragase and bombeyata are organised.

“Kempe Gowda Day should be celebrated every year,” said former mayor P.R. Ramesh. “I have written a letter to BBMP asking why it has been delayed this year,” he said.

BBMP commissioner S.

Subramanya tersely said that “BBMP is awaiting communication from the Governor’s office” regarding the celebration.
