Bangalore: After drawing flak from the common man and industry captains, the stakeholders involved in providing connectivity to Bangalore International Airport (BIA) — BBMP and infrastructure department — have made an attempt to allay fears.
Downplaying fears about a time-consuming journey to the BIA, BBMP commissioner S Subramanya and infrastructure department’s principal secretary V P Baligar said it will take an hour to reach the airport from Vidhana Soudha. “Work on all projects is going on at a brisk pace. We have conducted trial runs to estimate travel time,’’ they said on Tuesday. Legislative council chairman B K Chandrashekar, Baligar and Subramnaya, on Monday went on a trail run from the city centre to BIA. They said traffic bottlenecks would be cleared before the commencement of flight operations. “Sankey Road is being widened.
A surface-pass is being placed at BDA Junction. And very soon, such passes will be come up at CBI Junction and at Anandnagar. This will reduce travel time by more than 50 minutes,’’ said Subramanya. Referring to Cauvery Junction underpass, Sumbramanya: “According to traffic surveys, 1.16 lakh passenger car units (PCUs) use the road every day. But when the airport is opened, we estimate the PCUs will increase by 40,000.” Baligar said 99% of the infrastructure will be in place by May 11. Construction of six major roads leading to the new airport will also be completed on time. Work on the the trumpet flyover will be ready at the earliest.
