BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided resume road widening work on Race Course Road from Wednesday.
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, BBMP Commissioner S. Subramanya said the road widening work has been delayed owing to the shifting of the electricity cables which supply 450 kv power to the Vidhana Soudha and other central parts of the city. A few moths ago, the BBMP had felled a few trees on Race Course Road to widen the road.
The BBMP has taken up widening works of Race Course Road, Bellary Road, Hosur Road, Palace Road and Kasturba Road in the city and 88 arterial roads, he said. The underpass work at Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) junction would be completed at a cost of Rs. 2.8 crore and it was expected to be completed in 45 days. The work commenced on March 5. The work on the underpass at Anandnagar intersection on Bellary Road has been moving at a slow pace owing to rain. “We have lost eight days due to rains,” the Commissioner said.
The traffic from High Ground Police Station to Hebbal will be smooth after completion of all road works on that road. As much as 1.5 metre space would be provide for bicycle pathway on either side of the road till Hebbal, he said.
Stating that road widening works had been taken up taking into account the increased traffic in coming years, Mr. Subramanya said no road had been widened in the past few yeas on account of various reasons.
Legislative Council Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar said the neglect of city’s infrastructure by the previous two governments was the main reason for the delay in providing connectivity to the new airport. He complimented initiatives taken up by the BBMP.
Prof. Chandrashekar, Mr. Subramanya and Infrastructure Department Principal Secretary V.P. Baligar inspected road works on Bellary Road on Monday.
