BMTC gets into the act to help out

Bangalore: The BMTC is doing its bit to make the drive to the international airport more comfortable — it will start a Vayu Vajra fleet of Volvo buses between various points in the city and the airport. Operation will begin after the airport opens. “We will get delivery of 40 buses on Wednesday. The governor’s adviser, P K H Tharakan, will inaugurate the service on March 30,’’ BMTC MD Upendra Tripathy said on Tuesday. Volvo manufacturers announced on Tuesday said BMTC will purchase 240 buses. The second shipment — 200 buses — will be delivered later this year.
They will be used to augment the Vajra fleet which is already operational here. Each bus costs Rs 70 lakh, added Tripathy.
Forty buses will be deployed between the city centre and the airport, while the remaining will operate on other routes.
“BMTC’s decision comes after two years of testing,’’ said Volvo Bus Body Technologies India, MD, Akash Passey. The buses will be built in Volvo’s plant in Bangalore.
