Finally, the Rs 6,400-crore mega Metro Rail project that envisages a mass transport for Bangalore is taking concrete shape and work will commence on April 15.
Work at the casting yard, clearance by JBIC to fund Rs 1,800 crore, opening of financial bids for evaluation, reports submitted on award of compensation and
preparation of a traffic master plan for Reach One (MG Road to Byappanahalli) are among the processes that are underway.
A casting yard is being set up at Indiranagar on an 8-acre plot on the military land near the BDA complex. Heavy equipment that will manufacture piers are being set up at the yard, and manufacturing is expected to begin by the third week of April.
The traffic police, along with Metro Rail engineers, are finalising a traffic masterplan for Reach One (MG Road to Byappanahalli), so that construction work can be carried out smoothly. A study is also underway to work out diversions and curbs for the entire project. Police sources said the BMRCL authorities will take over space till the dedicated auto lane on M G Road and parking will be removed to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Work will be scaled up by September-October, when girders will be placed on piers, which may force the traffic police to make M G Road a one-way.
To avoid traffic disruption during peak hours, work will be done at night. The initial work will comprise digging for the foundation and as a first step, the bund on the road will be removed. Then, drilling will be taken up for putting up piers at an interval of 28 metres. The first phase will cover the 7-km stretch between MG Road and Byappanahalli, which is primarily an elevated stretch except in one place where it will go underground.
The project will be completed in six years.
