BANGALORE: Even as the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is gearing up for implementing the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP), the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has expressed concern over its impact on green belt and water bodies in the city.

The pollution control board has written to the BDA seeking its clearance before going ahead with the plan.

The plan in its existing form will have a major impact on the city by turning Garden City into a ‘Concrete Jungle’.

The KSPCB had conducted a survey to analyse the impact of CPD.The board has also objected to the BDA’s proposed move to take up its future projects in Bangalore South and West to overcome the problem of water scarcity.

Speaking to this website's newspaper, KSPCB chairman Dr H C Sharathchandra said that they had written to BDA stating that the civic agency should obtain clearance before incorporating the CDP.

‘‘We wrote to them stating that they should focus on the long term impact of the CDP and ensure balanced development and adequate maintenance of the green belt and water bodies,’’ he said.

He said there are three prime aspects which the BDA should focus on.

‘‘They should maintain a buffer zone between industries, commercial and residential establishments. The board receives a lot of complaints from residents regarding the increasing level of pollution emanating from nearby industrial establishments,’’ he said.‘‘The BDA should not allow development in industrial areas like Yeshwantpur, where residential islands exist between industries. Further, a buffer zone should be maintained amidst the increasing number of apartments. BDA should also create a buffer zone on highway medians by planting tall, small and bushy trees which absorb the increasing noise pollution and help riders,’’ added Sharathchandra.Don’t turn garden city into concrete jungle: KSPCB
