BANGALORE: The residents of HSR Layout need not dread monsoon any more. The BDA has provided an elaborate flood-proof infrastructure at a cost of about Rs 11 crore. In addition, the BDA has taken up other road works too in the area.

According to BDA officials, two bridges have been built across 14th main of HSR Layout and Outer Ring Road of Agaram Valley storm water drain. The existing pipe culvert was insufficient for high discharge of water, and according to hydrological calculations, the bridge location has the maximum flood discharge of 135 cusecs. Two newly built bridges of three vents each can handle heavy discharge of floods, the officials added.

HSR Layout, which is renamed as Kengal Hanumanthaiah Layout, was affected badly by floods in 2006. Several houses were inundated with rain water, including part of the Wipro office. BDA had to deploy bulk of its men and machinery to this single area to fight floods. The BDA has, in all, distributed 9816 plots in the seven sectors of HSR Layout, and houses have come up on 70 percent of the area. When heavy rains lashed Bangalore in 2006, HSR Layout suffered so much that it soon sent the land prices there crashing down.

As for other projects, the BDA officials said they have also built a second floor at the existing BDA complex in the area at a cost of Rs 4.06 crore considering the demand for commercial space. In addition, road works worth Rs 28 crore have been completed in both HSR and BTM layouts, and some more road improvement works are being taken up now, they added.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy will formally inaugurate various civil works completed in HSR layout and kickstart road works on Wednesday.
