BCC gets mechanised system to lift city waste

Bangalore, Jan. 2: The new solid waste management contract system for the city — which allows contractors to use mechanised systems to lift garbage — will come into effect from Thursday.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Bangalore City Corporation commissioner, K. Jairaj appealed to citizens to co-operate with the cleaning staff and keep the city clean. Explaining important features of the new system, he said contractors would use the mechanised system to compress solid waste. This would help them to carry larger quantities of waste at a single time in their vehicles. "We have taken steps to use at least 28 mechanised lorries for this purpose," he said.

The new system makes it mandatory for contractors to clean all toilets under their jurisdiction daily. They will also have to provide personnel to maintain the services.

The contractors will have to take care of parks, open spaces and unoccupied sites in their area. As many as 7505 push carts, 505 auto tippers, 211 lorries and 8,588 pourakarmikas would be used under the new contract system.
