No waiting for Volvos: Just SMS, board bus

Boarding a Volvo city bus in your next trip will soon be a cake-walk. All you have to do is to send an SMS giving your preferred route number and lo and behold, minute-by-minute details of the exact location of the bus will be sent to you, wherever you are.
D C Prakash, manager (Management Information Systems), BMTC said the linkup will be enabled through the GPS (Global Positioning Systems) fitted as a standard fitment in all 33 Volvo buses plying across seven routes. "All a commuter has to do is send short messaging service mentioning Y I (Yelli Idiya) meaning where are you, and the exact time, on-road location and arrival details of the bus will be sent back to you in a jiffy.
This will enable commuters to board buses without waiting at stops. All the 80 Volvo bus stops across the City will be linked via satellite to a number that is being decided. In about two weeks, a clear picture will emerge," he added.
The BMTC will also shortly introduce digital bi-lingual EDBs (Electronic Display Boards) in English and Kannada at all bus stops akin to those found at airports and railway stations so that details of all bus routes arriving at a respective stop is displayed. Tenders for this have been called for and BMTC is implementing it on a trial basis with few buses installed with GPS system, said officials.
