City police to join hands with BPO, software companies to guard roads

BANGALORE: After the Adeep Lahiri murder case, the focus is again on making the city roads- especially Koramangala, Whitefield and the Hosur Road area- safe for motorists at night.

In an attempt to avert muggings and killings on isolated roads and dark roads, the city police have decided to join hands with companies for joint patrolling.

In fact, the police say that Adeep’s killing was one such robbery attempt on a road on which a number of BPO and software employees travel everyday.

“Three zones - South, Southeast and East - will hold meetings with representatives from BPOs and civic agencies to guard the roads in the night,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Gopal B Hosur had said in a recent press conference.

The police are also mulling over an idea of having a joint patrolling with the assistance of private security personnel of companies.

“We cannot install check posts in selected places as thousands of vehicles ply on outer and inner ring roads. If companies give us vehicles, private security guards can join policemen in patrolling,” DCP East, P Muniswamy said.

He said that a few roads have dark patches in between brightly illuminated stretches, which makes it easy for muggers to hide and wait for some victims. DCP South Alok Kumar said that a meeting with the representatives will be held next week.

“We will instruct employees about the do’s and don’t’s while travelling back homes. The emphasis will be on dropping women employees. Even male employees too should not travel alone,” he said.
