Garbage piles up, Mayor unmoved

BANGALORE: Stink! Rotting vegetables and meat! How can one even enter such a place and shop! This is the scene everyday at Russell Market, the plight remains the same, the shoppers and vendors continue complaining, but the Mayor seems to be unmoved.

The vendors in Russell Market complain that despite many letters to Mayor Mumtaz Begum, nothing has been done. There are many flies and mosquitoes settling on the piled up garbage which is rotting in the vicinity of the market.

Gazer Ahmed, a vendor, said that help from the Mayor is minimal. “Nothing has been done to clear the rotting garbage. We have written many letters to the Mayor, but nothing has been done till date. It is very difficult for me to sit.”

Another vendor said that the area was cleaned six months back when the Mayor was visiting the place.

Siraj Ahmed, another vegetable vendor, said that they are losing out on customers because of the garbage. “Nobody is coming to our shops because of the foul smell and flies.”

Customers fear that they will fall ill. But the Mayor denies the complaints of the commoners. She told this paper that the area is cleaned twice a day and regular checks are taken regarding the cleanliness.

“The areas are swept and the garbage is disposed of as well. The vendors are disposing the garbage inappropriately and the garbage which is being disposed is not segregated.”

Why cant the vendors do the cleanup, since the garbage is created by them, instead of blaming the mayor and every other person on this universe.
