Minister’s kin create ruckus

In a repeat of a similar incident that took place recently, some of the City’s men-in-khaki were reduced to mute spectators when relatives of a BJP Cabinet-rank Minister, as well as his private secretary, created scenes over a petty matter in front of the Basaveshwaranagar police station, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

According to sources, Vineeth and his brother Vishurth, residents of Kamakshipalya and the college-going sons of a close relative of the Minister, were allegedly seen behaving cheaply in front of Vidya Vardhaka Sangha First Grade College for Women in Basaveshwaranagar, on Tuesday evening. They were reportedly seen doing wheelies in front of the college and swearing loudly, all the while blaring their bike horns. Sub-Inspector G Om Prakash, who was on patrol, caught the boys in the act and questioned them. Immediately, Vineeth began bandying the name of his famous relative. When the officer did not relent, Vineeth began using foul language. The infuriated SI then slapped Vineeth and hauled the two boys off to the police station.

They had hardly been at the station a few minutes before the telephones began ringing, pressurising Om Prakash to let off the boys. The Minister’s private secretary then barged into the station, flashed his card and ordered the SI to release the boys and not to register any case. The boys’ parents soon also landed up and, begging for forgiveness on their sons’ behalf, requested the police not to file any case as it would hamper the boys’ future. After a great deal of arguing, the boys’ father finally convinced them to write an apology letter, and then took them home.

But the matter did not end here. According to a senior constable, the drama spilled over into the next day too when, on Wednesday night, around 50 to 70 supporters of the two young offenders thronged the police station and demanded that the SI tender an apology. The assistant commissioner of police as well as the inspectors were also summoned in an attempt to keep the matter under control. However, Om Prakash, a 2001 batch inspector, stood his ground and did not budge.

When this reporter tried to contact the Minister, he was unable to get through. Instead, the Minister’s personal secretary sought to determine how the matter had got leaked out. Incidentally, the Minister’s house is at a stone’s throw from the police station.Minister’s kin create ruckus
