Minister for Forests C Chennigappa inspected the Yeshwanthpur APMC Yard on Tuesday and ordered that the loads of vegetable waste and piles of garbage that dot the yard be cleaned within the next five days.

Minister for Forests C Chennigappa inspected the Yeshwanthpur APMC Yard on Tuesday and ordered that the loads of vegetable waste and piles of garbage that dot the yard be cleaned within the next five days. Tuesday’s visit is a continuation of the surprise checks on the neglect of the environment around civic amenities in Bangalore, by the minister.

Taking the APMC authorities to task for failing in waste management and maintenance of cleanliness, the minister directed the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to take charge of the issue. The BMP has been asked to clean the yard over the next five days and collect the charges for the same from the APMC authorities.

The traders, vendors and farmers who met the minister at the yard however vented their ire against the BMP too. The BMP collects a monthly cess of Rs 2 lakh from the yard, therefore it should take some responsibility on its own, they said.

However, persons connected with the yard on a regular basis appeared to have no clear idea of waste management.

While some said that clearance trucks came once a week, others said that the waste dumps are cleared only once a month or so. Chennigappa ordered the officials to ensure that there is clearance in the yard, twice a day.

The minister’s concern apart, apathy and political gimmicks vied with each other during his visit. Stray cattle looked a part and parcel of the dumps that were any and many in the yard and the minister missed no opportunity to stop by them and oblige the media cameras and the video. Political supporters who accompanied the minister kept to their side of the job by sloganeering. At the nearby Yeshwanthpur Market, his team was rendered helpless against pollution. They could only watch as the crowd of supporters greeted him by bursting crackers. And traffic hold-up in the cramped market was another issue altogether.
