Mayor Mumtaz Begum, on Monday, proved to be no exception. She proposed two flyovers -- one from Balekundry Circle to Shivajinagar bus stand, and the other at Coles Park junction.

Flyovers in the City ease traffic bottlenecks. That at least is the received wisdom. In any case, elected representatives seem to think that announcements on new flyovers win them more than debating points.

Mayor Mumtaz Begum, on Monday, proved to be no exception. She proposed two flyovers -- one from Balekundry Circle to Shivajinagar bus stand, and the other at Coles Park junction.

“It will rid Shivajinagar of traffic congestion. It has been included in the Budget too,” said Ms Begum, who was in Shivajinagar ward (79) to distribute sewing machines, stipends and medical cheques to beneficiaries. The mayor gave away 60 driving licences, 60 sewing machines, 219 embroidery stipend, sports material, 100 saplings and 26 medical cheques of Rs 5,000 each in her ward.

Speech in Urdu: Meanwhile, the mayor sprang a surprise by switching over to Urdu while making her speech which she started off in Kannada. “I sensed that the audience was aloof, as most of the girls and women were school dropouts and did not understand Kannada. The idea was to communicate better,” Ms. Begum later told reporters.

“Women should utilise the benefits extended to them and attain self-reliance.,” she advised the women. She also called upon residents and traders in the City to “co-operate” in the development works. “Ward 79 has benefited as much from the Mayor’s Fund as from other ward-related works,” she added.
