BANGALORE: Silver Jubilee Park (SJP), one of the oldest parks in the heart of the City, is all set to get a facelift. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has already completed nearly 50 percent of work at the park spread over five acres.

Tree Officer, BMP Krishna D Udapudi, told this paper that the renovation work is now in the final stages and will be complete by September 30. In the first phase, the BMP has spent Rs 70 lakh and for the rest of the work it will be investing another Rs 50 lakh.

“There is an open storm water drain which flows in the middle of the park. Its closing and maintenance will be completed by the Land Army Corporation within a week,” he said.

Ornamental illuminations, garden chairs, playground for children, pathway for joggers, security provisions and ample number of tress providing adequate lung space for residents are being provided.

President of Karnataka Hardware and Align Merchants’ Association, B K Goyal said that earlier the park was in a pathetic condition and nobody dared to enter as it was filthy and housed nefarious activities.

“People were keen on closing it down and converting it into a parking lot. But the High Court order to increase the green belt in the City helped initiate this beautification work,” he said.

“The park will be free of traders and there will be ample provisions for residents to walk on earthen flooring”, he added.
