BANGALORE: Moderate rainfall coupled with cold breeze chilled the bones of Bangaloreans on Thursday, after they braved high temperatures for the last few days.

The woollen gears are out following vigorous monsoon over south interior Karnataka which brought relief as the mercury dipped in the City.

While the city meteorological department recorded 2.5 mm of rainfall, airport office recorded 5.4 mm and Yelahanka recorded 3.5 mm till 8.30 pm Met department has cautioned of cloudy weather followed by light rains for the next two days.

The failure of southwest monsoon might be a boon for the farming community as the weather experts have predicted good amount of rainfall during the north-east monsoon.

Often, the failure of southwest monsoon brings more rains during north-east monsoon.

The northeast monsoon starts in early October and continues till December contributing to 23 percent of annual rainfall of the City.

“Heavy rains are expected in October. The north east-monsoon generates from the Bay of Bengal. The high intensity clouds will convert into cyclones and precipitate heavily,” said Prof M B Raje Gowda, Head, Department of Agrometeorology, GKVK.

He said that due to high pressure in the south interior Karnataka region, the clouds did not pass through this path and hence there was no precipitation as expected during the last three months. The southwest monsoon contributes 70 percent of annual rainfall of Bangalore.
