Low-cost housing on the anvil

Low-cost housing on the anvil
The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has a new initiative in place. M K Shankaralinge Gowda, Commissioner, outlines the new housing scheme and BDA’s role in the Greater Bangalore project
The Times of India

What is the new housing scheme all about?
BDA is planning a budget housing project to meet the requirements of the lower middle class. Under this plan, the initiative will be to provide compact houses to the underprivileged citizens.
How large is this project?
This is a massive project spread over 500 acres throughout Bangalore city. The project will not be restricted to one location and will spread in different directions within the city. A whopping 50,000 sites have been planned tentatively and would be allotted to economically backward families. The BDA will acquire and own the land as well as make the allotments according to applications.
What will the role of builders be?
The entire housing scheme will be a joint development project with the various private builders. While the land will be owned by the BDA and allotted to applicants, private builders will construct the houses. The launch of this project is linked to the master plan which will be released at the end of September. Once the master plan is in place, the land will be located around various areas in the city and the layouts planned accordingly. The houses will be styled along the lines of apartment blocks and each house will be around 500 sqft and 700 sqft with single or double bedrooms.
How will houses be allotted?
The BDA will call for applications and allotment will be done on a priority basis. Preference will be given to those who have applied for 20x30 sites earlier since sites of this dimension will not be formed anymore. The houses will be priced less to fit the budget of the urban poor.
The e-pragathi kiosks put up at the various BDA complexes in the city will cater to the requirements of the applicants. The applicants can access information about the budget housing scheme, layout map as well as submit applications. Presently two kiosks - one each at HRBR Layout and Jayanagar - are fully operational.
What will BDA's role be in the Greater Bangalore project?
The BDA will continue to be the planning authority in the emerging Greater Bangalore project too. Of the 1,300 sq km, 600 sq km will be within BDA's existing land area. It will also be the regulatory body with reference to sites and layouts, and the land use will be better. The master plan of 2015 will take care of the needs of Greater Bangalore residents.

I wonder why BDA and other city planners in India are not thinking about Singapore style Govt owned low cost housing. I feel by giving 20x30 sites, even for free to poor families is not going to improve quality of their life. Buy helping the urban sprawl, govt is just adding to already existing issues of congestion.... I think building higher with proper public transportation is the way to go. Hope govt babus, learn atleast something from their visits abroad.

Low cost housing seems like a good idea...But i wonder of what standard they would build it in india...Even the best buildings are sub-standard. Low cost housing does raise an eyebrow (Atleast with me !)

based on Mr.Nagarajn's comments, In India our engineers are have very good knowledge to fulfill thsi low cost housings better thatn Singapore. But the problem is not with the construction or the location or the site. The main problem is with the POLITICIANS. These people want to allocate those low cost housing to allot only to their party followers, but not for the real poor or required people that are constructed by the govt.
