Mayor Mumtaz Begum, on Thursday, wondered how the Greater Bangalore project would be implemented when ward-level issues continue to dog the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

The Mayor’s reaction came during an inspection of Shivajinagar - her ward - limits.

BWSSB’s negligence in ensuring proper work on its sewerage and drinking water lines are the cause of much inconvenience in Shivajinagar and the case is no different in other wards too, she observed.

“The BWSSB indulges in haphazard work. Sewerage lines interfere with storm water drains. causing a mess”, the mayor said.

Sewerage

She noted that on occasions, sewerage flows out of drinking water pipes because of leakage, which harms the quality of the road too.

Her inspection included Mudaliar Street, Taj Hotel Road, Narayana Pillai Street among others and the case is similar across all these areas, she noted.

She pointed out that work on the construction of a pedestrian way, over a SWD stretch (between Taj Hotel and Lal Masjid), is hampered because sewerage is seen flowing in the SWD.

Traders in the area complained to the mayor on the foul smell they are forced to breath every day.

Waste from Bowring

The waste water from the Bowring Hospital too is let into the SWD, they noted.

At the Russell market, the mayor and team were greeted by mounds of decaying fish. Much of the demands of the traders have been met by the BMP, yet the the traders have neglected cleanliness and waste management, Ms Begum noted.
