What is the worth of government land being encroached upon by land sharks, in and around Bangalore?

What is the worth of government land being encroached upon by land sharks, in and around Bangalore? According to Chairman of the joint legislature committee on land encroachments, Mr A T Ramaswamy, it would be equal to the state’s annual revenue of Rs 42,000 crore!

According to him, the encroached land includes about Rs 2,878 acres belonging to the BDA, 15,000 acres belonging to the revenue department and 750 acres belonging to the forest department.

The land sharks, with help from officials, were even destroying original land documents at the revenue offices to make sure that encroachments were not noticed, he alleged.

Giving an instance, Ramaswamy said the original land documents of several villages in Jala hobli located near the proposed International airport at Devanahalli, were missing at the revenue offices.

In another case, ownership right of 200 acres of land in Jigani Industrial area was given to several persons in 1991 by the land tribunal concerned, though the scheme of regularising the ownership right had ended in 1979, he alleged.
