With the deadline of December 2006 for the ambitious road widening work around the corner, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) and the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) are busy clearing the encroachments along the proposed roads.

On Tuesday, BMP Commissioner K Jairaj, along with KRDCL MD Ramesh Jhalaki, additional commissioner of police (Traffic) M N Reddi and other senior officials reviewed the works on the arterial roads - Palace Road, Race Course Road, Bellary Road, Richmond circle to Silk Board junction, Sarjapur Road, BTM Ring Road and Bannerghatta Road.

Mr Jairaj ordered the executive engineers to commence the road widening work on the Palace Road (from Cauvery Bhavan to Basaveshwara Circle), after inspecting the newly erected compound walls. “The old walls need to be demolished to pave way for the widening,” he said.

First phase

The first phase of the road widening project will take off on Bellary Road, between Hebbal flyover and the BDA office.

“The road will be transformed into six-laned track, which will facilitate smoother flow of traffic,” assured Mr Jairaj.

The pushcarts selling kababs near the beef market on Broadway street (Shivajinagar) were evicted on Tuesday by the BMP officials.

The health officer of Shivajinagar (Ward 79) ordered the eviction, as the carts were unauthorised and were found to be obstructing the pedestrian movement along the pavement.
