Auto taming draws mixed response

The Regional Transport Authoritys (RTA) initiative to usher discipline in autorickshaw drivers and owners has received a mixed response, with a majority of auto drivers unions in the City welcoming the initiative, while many others are opposing it.

On July 13, RTA made a notification in the Karnataka Gazette by including some more conditions to the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Act, 1989. It stated that any violations of the Permit Condition Violation will attract a fine ranging between Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 or an imprisonment of one year.

Welcoming the RTA initiative, the Bangalore Auto and Taxi Divers Union and the Adrasha Auto and Taxi drivers Union told VVi ijja ay y TTi immees s, "This initiative is intended to bring discipline into the auto drivers and also to avoid foul play by some. So we welcome it".

But most auto union leaders opposing the initiative have said that the higher fine amount may be a huge hindrance to the drivers who earn only between Rs 150 to Rs 200 per day.

They also urged the RTA to drop these conditions from the Permit Condition Violation rule.

If the driver violates any of these conditions, he will be liable for a penalty of Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 for first time offence. Subsequent violation (second time) will attract a fine between Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 or one year imprisonment, the Gazette notification says.
