The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike partly demolished two buildings on Mission Road that had encroached upon a secondary drain leading to the Koramangala valley, on Wednesday.

The two private buildings, that is still under construction, encroaching nearly five feet of the ten feet wide drain, triggered floods following the heavy downpour in the wee hours Tuesday.

Due to the narrowing of the drain, over 50 houses and apartment basements were flooded with over three feet of filthy water in C K Chinnappa Gardens, Srinivasa Colony and Raja Ram Mohan Roy Extension.

The buildings, owned by private builders Chandrashekhar and Srinivas Murthy, had encroached along the length of 160 feet on the drain next to Sathi Complex on Mission Road.

Inspection

Meanwhile, BMP Commissioner K Jairaj, responding to the complaints filed by the residents, undertook a spot inspection of the affected areas in South Bangalore on Wednesday morning.

He studied the situation and ordered for demolition of the encroached portions of the three storey buildings immediately.

Fine imposed

Another encroachment on Rajakaluve at Srinivasa Colony, Sudhamanagar, was also removed. A fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on Subramanya, the owner of the encroached property.

Jairaj cautioned that BMP will demolish encroachments all along the storm water drains.

“We cannot put up with illegal structures that is encroaching upon the drainage network. We have been given a green signal by the government to demolish all encroachments,” Jairaj said.
