Work on 10-lane corridor starts tomorrow

BANGALORE: Work on the ten-lane mixed corridor from Silk Board Junction to the Electronics City on the Bangalore-Hosur section on National Highway 7 will start on Saturday. This comes as the first step in solving the problem of traffic congestion and meeting the long-felt need of Information Technology entrepreneurs of Electronics City to save commuting time.

Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa told reporters that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would lay the foundation stone for the elevated highway project work at Madivala Police Parade Grounds on June 24.

The existing four-lane section is the main access road to Tamil Nadu and Kerala from the western and central parts of the country. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had taken up capacity improvement of the highway between 8.765 km and 33.13 km, involving construction of a nine-km four-lane elevated highway from Silk Board Junction to Electronics City. It has also taken up work on improving the section between 8.765 km and 18.75 km and making six-lane the stretch between 18.75 km and 33.13 km.

Mr. Muniyappa said the NHAI had taken up the project at a cost of Rs. 450 crore and the construction would be completed in 24 months.

Construction of two vehicular subways at Chandapura and Attibele junctions; construction of eight pick-up bus stops with shelters, lighting for elevated highway and ground level, and highway traffic management system are among the other projects.
