Provide alternative space first

Provide alternative space first
Deccan Herald

`Walkers only' concept on busy shopping streets will not work if parking spaces are not provided at a short distance from such places, say our readers.

Small parking lots

Many roads have been made no-parking zones. While the idea of banning vehicle parking on certain arterial roads is sound, alternative parking space should be provided at a nearby spot.

Small parking lots could be created for two-wheelers. Multi-level parking is ideal for cars but not for two-wheelers.

Transport lacking

"Pedestrians only" streets are common in the West because they have reliable public transportation.

On overcrowded stretches like Commercial Street and Brigade Road, the "walkers only" idea will work with exemption given to the physically challenged. Ban on parking will be useful only if alternatives are provided.

Metered parking better

"Walk through" roads will definitely help in curbing pollution from vehicles on certain roads.

But the traders have spent on parking meters on Brigade Road and Commercial Street. Why should they cooperate with the police on enforcing the "pedestrians only" rule?

Metered parking has its advantages; shoppers limit their time and rush back and the slot is vacated soon enough for other vehicles.

This should be encouraged.

Regulate parking

Parking should be strictly regulated but not banned altogether unless other parking space is made available close enough. Unfortunately, very few prefer to walk. Parallel parking or diagonal parking can be tried out to suit road widths and traffic density. The city needs more multi-level parking lots, considering the increase in the number of cars on the roads.

Space shortage

Some busy streets can be reserved for pedestrians alone while providing parking space close enough.

Even now many shoppers park their cars on Main Guard Cross and walk to Commercial Street because of limited and metered parking on that street. Reducing both traffic congestion and pollution can be brought about through many measures, and curbs on parking can only be one of them.

Space is at premium

Parking space is at a premium at places like Mahatma Gandhi Road. We do need pedestrians only zones but they can only be a few and far between. On other roads, alternatives have to be planned for at least now.

On trial basis

The elderly, the weak and the disabled cannot be prevented from being driven to a shopping area. Are they to be limited only to the young and physically fit? Many types of people use the roads, and we need to be considerate to all of them. But pedestrians-only zones, with some exceptions, can be designated on a few stretches to start with. It has to be on a trial basis.
