Ninety-three panic calls in a single day. On June 19, the rainwater gushing into houses triggered panic among residents in the low-lying areas.

The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) is now hoping to tackle the danger from a close distance, and within a minimum response time. It has set up seven new control rooms in the low-lying areas.

“The control rooms have been set up in vulnerable wards and are in addition to the existing four control rooms. More vehicles and more men can clear the storm water drains and shoulder drains faster,” says BMP Commissioner K Jairaj.

The teams are working towards making the flow of rainwater in the low-lying areas faster. A strict order from the Commissioner to the senior officers is ‘to be available during heavy rains, to inspect the disaster mitigation steps.’ Each control room will be equipped with a vehicle, 10 gangmen, 10 hp pumpset and ladders.
