CHIEF Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s recent announcement that the government would regularise those illegal structures that did not come in the way of development activities has brought cheer to thousands of residents in the City and its surrounding areas.
During a surprise inspection at Puttenahalli, the Chief Minister had said, "I will be merciful when it comes to demolishing structures, as the issue involves the interests of over a thousand families.
It is estimated that the government will stand to gain a sum of Rs 1,100 crore from the process of regularising unauthorised structures.
An official from the Dasarahalli City Municipal Council (CMC) said that a survey conducted by the authorities of the seven CMCs and a T own Municipal Council ( TMC) had revealed that thousands of illegal structures had cropped up.
NO OF ILLEGAL BUILDINGS
According to an estimate, around 70,000 structures had been built on revenue sites in Bommanahalli, Dasarahalli, Rajarajeshwari, Mahadevapura, Krishnarajapuram, Y elahanka and Kengeri areas.
"The authorities of the respective local bodies have swung into action and are conducting a survey on such illegal structures," he added.
Following this, the officials of the Survey Department have identified over 500 such buildings coming under the Bommanahalli CMC alone, the official informed.
WILL BENEFIT KANNADIGAS
"By regularising such structures, the government can earn Rs 1,100 crore. Regularising such structures will benefit most Kannadigas. Most of those who own such structures are from neighbouring villages. Several people lead their lives either on daily wages or on small earnings," (he said.) The fine collected would be utilised for providing civic amenities like water and good roads, Ashok said.
CMC S, TMC, BCC MERGER
Efforts are on to merge the seven CMCs and a TMC with the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC).
The merger process will be completed before the BCC elections. In the meantime, a decision on how much money should be collected as betterment charge (development charge) will be taken, he said.
The officials of local bodies said that most gullible people had been misled by builders, who had lured their victims to the sites by quoting throw away prices.
CM SCONCERN FOR POOR
It may be recalled that a middleaged woman had sobbed in front of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy during his inspection at Puttenahalli. The lady , who claimed to be a widow , had said that she had built her house by obtaining loans.
I will have no where to go if this building is demolished," she had said.
"The Chief Minister may have taken the decision to regularise such illegal constructions after realising the problems of the poor ," an official said.
However , he said that the Chief Minister had directed them to remove those illegal structures that were hindering development works.
