With Most Work Planned Off-Site,Traffic Will Possibly Not Be Disrupted

Bangalore: Work on the Rs 760-crore flyover from Silk Board to Electronic City will take off in a week if the National Highway Association of India gives the contractors a go-ahead to advance the date from July 23 to mid-May.

Also known as the ‘IT flyover’, it is expected to reduce travel time from Silk Board junction to Electronic City from the current one hour to a mere 10 minutes. The project is seen as the model for all future infrastructure constructions as 75 per cent of the work will be done off site, without hindering the movement of traffic. The work on this 10 km stretch will be undertaken in three steps and is expected to get over within five months.

“Covering the 20-km long storm water drain, which runs on either side of the road, will be our first step and will cost us Rs 20 crore. It will be followed by widening of roads from the existing 8.5 meters to 11.25 meters. Hence, traffic won’t be hindered while the work is on,’’ said an official.

To minimise activity on the site, pre-construction materials - like cement slabs, tunnels, flyover pillars among others — will be prepared at off-site locations of Attibele, Hoskur and Naganathpura. They will then be brought, assembled and fixed on steel beams in the middle of the road.

Currently, the contractors are investigating the ground to detect the best section to lay the foundation stone and its depth. The range has varied from 4 meters in some parts of the road to 30 meters at other locations of the road. The construction work in the area is a part of the bigger project, where roads on stilts will start from Vellara Junction, pass Central Silk Board, Electronic City and extend right up to the TN border. It is expected to be completed by 2008.
