BANGALORE: After the success of the Volvo service between Kempe Gowda Bus Station and ITPL, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has decided to introduce two more services.

The first service will be from Srinagar to Domlur (No. 201) and the second from J.P. Nagar to Majestic (No. 2), and they are likely to be introduced next week.

As the corporation is expecting delivery of more Volvo buses, there will be no delay in the introduction of the new services. The frequency and timings are being worked out.

Chief Traffic Manager of BMTC Dastagir Sharief said that five buses on the ITPL route (Kempe Gowda Bus Station to ITPL) that made 50 trips a day were being patronised well. During the general shift (between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.), a single trip took a maximum of 40 minutes when there were no major traffic snarls, Mr. Sharief said.

The service between Kempe Gowda Bus Station and Electronic City was also picking up despite operations being hampered by frequent traffic jams on Hosur Road.

This route also had five buses plying at a frequency of 45 minutes each.

Mr. Sharief said the operation of Volvo buses would be more viable when they were provided dedicated lanes and priority at traffic signals.

The corporation had introduced the services in order to decongest the city roads of private vehicles, he noted.

Had the Volvo buses been allowed a freeway, more commuters would have given up the use of their vehicles and patronised the public transport system, he said.
