Bangalore: Horticulturists and nature lovers will have reason to rejoice as the government has decided to convert the two leading botanical gardens of the City -- Lalbagh and Cubbon Park -- into international tourist centres.

This was the promise made by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy i m m e d i a t e l y after assuming the office and reiterated by Governor T N Chaturvedi in his address to joint session of legislature. They had announced the new government’s decision to convert both the botanical gardens of the City into international tourist centres.

The Lalbagh, spread over an area of 248 acres, has hundreds of rare species of vegetation, plants and herbs.

Speaking to Vijay Times, V asanth Kumar , director , Horticulture department, said : "W e are preparing the project report. W e have plans to change a lot of things inside Lalbagh to make it even more attractive to tourists." There were plans to increase the height of the compound. Also , to tighten security , all the gates would be computerised, he said.

"The aquarium in Lalbagh will be renovated. As we have several people coming to the gardens to jog, the number of jogging tracks will be increased. The Victoria Fountain will be made into a musical fountain while music programmes will be held at the Kempegowda T ower ," he said At the Cubbon park, damaged electric wires would be replaced and more jogging tracks would be created, he said.

The over all cost of the project would come to around Rs 9 crore, and the work on this project will be taken up in April-May next year, the director informed.
