Vijay Times

BUGGED with traffic snarls and roads that are congested and battered? Then, blame the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) for its lackadaisical attitude in implementing ambitious road widening projects. Several programmes like resurfacing roads and road-widening have been left in limbo for a long time now .

In a bid to resolve overwhelming traffic problems and upgrade existing roads, the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) will hold a special meeting with the officials of civic bodies. The meeting, which will be held shortly , is to ensure that works are executed without hassles. Participants at the meet: BCC ruling Congress leader H Ravindra said the meeting would be held at the Kempegowda Council Hall and would be attended by MLAs, MPs, secretaries of Housing and Urban Development, police commissioner and citizens. The discussion would revolve on road widening under T ransferable Development Rights ( TDR).

U nder the TDR project, BCC has identified 85 roads that need to be widened. It will begin road widening work on 45 roads under the first phase. Land acquisition: Presently , the engineers have been making efforts to acquire lands on Hosur and Palace Roads. According to an engineer engaged in road widening, a survey had been completed on 10 roads.

W e are in the process of acquiring lands after convincing the public about the advantages of carrying out these works. A resolution has been passed in the BCC Council in this regard, the engineer added.

Following the announcement, the public raised a hue and cry over the project. Official clarifies: Another BCC official said, The project has been going through rough weather as it has not been discussed with the public extensively . Public interaction programmes have not been organised and as a result, the public have been kept in the dark about the advantages of the programme." Public comment: Deepak, an IT professional, said the number of vehicles had been increasing without restrictions while the number of roads and their widths had remained the same causing traffic problems.
