Date for display of the cards has been extended to March 31

BANGALORE: The city traffic police have extended the date for display of their identity cards by autorickshaw drivers in vehicles to March 31. The police have asked all autorickshaw drivers to apply to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East) for identity cards and display them in their vehicles on April 1.

Last year, the city traffic police, in consultation with the Transport authorities and the autorickshaw drivers' unions, came out with the plan on the display of drivers' identity cards in their vehicles. The decision was taken following complaints by passengers about the behaviour of drivers.

The identity cards contain the name of the driver, his address, photograph and details about his driving licence. These identity cards will be displayed in such a way that it is clearly visible to the passenger. The Transport authorities made display of identity cards one of conditions for issuing permits to ply autorickshaws. The display of identity cards was made mandatory from January 2006.

Close to 4,000 drivers have got the identity cards. The city traffic police issued the cards after the Transport authorities gave the clearances. Some unions sought extension of time for display of details. The police gave them time till March 1. This has now been extended to March 31.
