BJP members in the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) on T uesday urged the BCC to renovate the Puttanna Theatre in Jayanagar at the earliest.

A team headed by BJP leader in the BCC Council H Basavaraj inspected the theatre, which is in a pathetic state due to poor maintenance.

During his visit, Basavaraj alleged that the BCC has released Rs 3.25 crore for renovation of the theatre four years ago, but the work is yet to begin till date. "The BCC, which denied actor Vishuvardhan’s appeal to handover the theatre on a contract basis, has now decided to the follow Renovate-Operate-T ransfer (ROT) method. This has paved way to various irregularities," he said.

"Despite discussions about the subject in the monthly meetings of the BCC Council for the last three months, Mayor Mumtaz Begum has failed to visit the place even once," he lamented.

WILL THE YEDIYUR LAKE SEE ANY DEVELOPMENT ? After inspecting the Puttanna theatre, the team paid a visit to the Y ediyur lake to review the progress of its the development.

Expressing unhappiness over the delay in works with regard to the lake’s development, Basavaraj alleged that despite sanction of Rs 3.90 crore for development of the lake, the work is yet to complete. Of total 17 acres of the lake area, six acres has been encroached upon, he added.

Meanwhile, development of the remaining 11 acres was awarded to Shamaraju Constructions. As per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act, the company should have desilted the lake at a depth of five metres as part of the development work, but they have desilted only one metre. Despite this, the BCC has cleared their bill for Rs 2.65 crore, he said and urged the authorities concerned to get the work started immediately .
