Your crammed, rickety neighbourhood post office is in for a long overdue make-over. Or rather, that’s what the Department of Posts is trying to convey with the launch of the Look-alike Post Offices. The Department kicked off the pilot project on Monday with the launch of the renovated Malleswaram Post Office, sporting an elegant, corporate look.

After inaugurating the post office Ms Meera Datta, Chief Postmaster General — Karnataka Circle said good-looking post offices was a concept devised to instill confidence among customers and ensure job satisfaction for the staff.

“Such innovations are imperative in these times of technological revolutions in the field of communication. However, along with these changes, we also have to modernise our minds to meet the customer demands effectively,” Ms Datta said.

“The government can’t afford to employ more staff, because the department is running under losses. However, we have more than 60 dedicated staff working in this post office.

Even the courier delivery boys depend on our postmen for addresses. We should be able to convert these advantages into better results,” she said. Ms Datta added that the department was looking at possibilities of opening separate counters for Savings Bank agents to avoid delay in transactions involving senior citizens.

The renovated three-floor post office, situated on Malleswaram 8th Cross, has around 240 square metres on each floor.

The top two floors house the delivery units. The renovation was taken up on a budget of Rs 15 lakh.

The department had earlier undertaken modernisation initiatives in post offices in J P Nagar, Museum Road and other areas.
