BANGALOREANS are now worried about the danger posed by dead trees to the lives of humans in the City . Their worries seem to be wellfounded as a first year B Com student recently lost her life after being struck by a branch in the premises of the Maharani’s College.

The death has, apart from sending shivers down the spine of Bangaloreans, sparked off a debate.

The City’s residents are also worried about trees ’biting the dust’ even before the onset of active monsoon.

T alking to VT, , deputy conservator of forest in the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) Krishna D Udapudi said two teams had been formed to identify trees that were posing a threat to human lives.

"Presently , the teams are engaged in identifying trees in the South and East zones. The team, comprising 15 persons, has been equipped with a lorry , an electronic cutter and saws.

The team will go from road to road in all the wards," U dapudi said.

"From W ednesday , another team will be deputed to identify trees in the W est zone," he added.

If the need arises, the number of the teams will be doubled. As of now , census of trees has been completed in N agpur , RPC Layout and Shivajinagar wards. The census findings will be analysed and accordingly , the trees will be pruned, felled or strengthened, he informed.

If the trees are found to be dangerous, they will be removed after I inspect them, he added.

The BCC had invited applications from the public for the purpose of carrying out the tree census. In response to it, around 80 persons had evinced interest in the programme, he said.

U dapudi said he would convene a meeting on March 15 and entrust them with the job of tree census according to the guidelines. "Simultaneously , the trees will also be numbered," he said.

I have instructed the college authorities to identify the dangerous trees. Following an inspection, they will be removed by the BCC, said U dapudi.
