Rs. 3 cr upgradation works underway
The following report will be the first of a series affairs at the stations, the problems faced by commuters

THE century-old Y eshwantpur Station, which is about six kilometers away from the City Rai Station, is considered to be one of the most impor tant terminals as major trains, especially those b Nizamuddin, Howrah, Muzaffarpur and Kachiguda depart from here. Though the station had an entr a new entry point was officially inaugurated on Se 2001.

Thousands, who use this terminal everyday , very pleased with the services offered here.

However , the South W estern Railway (SWR), plans to improve the infrastructure of the initiated upgradation works that are going o swing at an estimated cost of Rs three crore.

THE STATION AT A GLANCE

The station, which does not have parking space for wheelers, autos and taxis, also does not have adequate number of sitting benches and roofs. As a result, commuters waiting for trains in t terminal stand for long hours under the scorching sun.

There are six platforms in the station of which platform number four is yet to be commissioned. The facilities in the station premises are poor as compared to the Bangalore City station. Commuters are of the opinion that additional toilets and taps should be provided at the station.

WASHABLE APRONS ON ALL PLATFORMS

Speaking to BVT , SWR Divisional Railway Man Mahesh Kumar said the concreting of all the would be taken up along with the laying of aprons.

"The apron work on platforms one and two are underway . It will take about 45 days to complete work on each platform. The work on the other platforms will begin only after the completion of these two platforms. The work is expected to get over by the end of March," Kumar informed.

OTHER FACILITIES

Pre-paid auto and taxi counters, apart from an additional station complex, are scheduled to come up here.

"The pre-paid counters are almost ready and the complex construction has begun," sources at the Y eshwantpur Railway Station informed.

In addition to this, dead-end shelters, benches, taps and ’pay and use’ toilets would also be coming up in all the platforms. "As far as water taps are concerned, the structures are in place. All that is left is for the taps to be fixed," sources said.

PARKING AT THE BASEMENT

The new complex, coming up near the entrance of the building, will have retiring rooms, an AC lounge, a cloak room, stalls and a canteen. "All this is coming up in the ground floor and work is expected to be completed shortly . Space for two-wheeler parking will be provided at the basement," K umar informed.

ON THE ANVIL

The railways also has plans in place for the next year .

"Eight retiring rooms and a dormitory will come up in the first floor of the complex. W ork on these will begin next year ," sources said.

The railways believes that these new structures and facilities would be enough to meet the needs of passengers using this terminal.
