Bangalore: The city police will introduce pre-paid auto counters on the MG Road on Wednesday evening. Few more are in the pipeline and it will be a new year gift to the residents from the traffic police. One has to pay fare to the driver at the end of the journey as suggested by the police while hiring the autorickshaw.

The pre-paid auto counter near the arrival lounge at the airport will function round the clock. This counter will be inaugurated on Wednesday evening by the police commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh. Initially, for a month, traffic police will run the show, DCP, Traffic (East) M A Saleem said.

The pre-paid counter on MG Road (located between Shringar Complex and Barton Centre) and near Commercial Street (at the intersection of Kamraj Road and Dickenson Road) will function between 10 am and 10 pm. Traffic police will run the counter till alternative arrangements are made.

Another counter will come up on MG Road, opposite Cauvery Handicrafts show room on the other side of the road and will be inaugurated on December 24. Autos will be allowed on MG Road on Saturdays as well. This will benefit people going towards East and Ulsoor, Saleem said. Two more counters at both the entrance of Forum Mall in Koramangala will come up by January 1, he added. Yeshwanthapur Railway station will also have a pre-paid counter for which building is getting ready, ACP, Traffic (North), Lakshman Singh said.

The city has three pre-paid auto counters already near KSRTC bus stand in Majestic area, City and Cantonment railway stations. Here the customer has to pay Re 1 as service charge to the person manning the counter. Where as with regard to three counters which will be thrown open to the public on Wednesday, this service tax need not be paid as they are manned by the traffic police.
