‘Content’ Bangaloreans complain only once a week!

Most on-the-move Bangaloreans will have a sob story to tell on how an auto-rickshaw driver duped them or their experience behind a black smoke-emitting truck. Many would deliver a cynical lecture on bribery in the Transport Department at the slightest provocation.

But if you go by the complaints received by the Transport Department’s official website, you will be led to believe that Bangaloreans are an uncomplaining, content lot. For, the two-year old website, that also records commuter complaints, receives only one complaint a week! According to the Transport Department, the website has a complaint redressal mechanism in place, but is under-utilised, due to lack of awareness.

The department’s website, rto.kar.nic.in has a direct link to the complaint register, and internet users can use it by clicking on the icon ‘Complaints’.

Complainants can also email their grievances to transcom@rto.kar.nic.in. “Complaints are attended to on the very day it is received, and we promptly reply to the complainant on the developments,” reveals Joint Commissioner (Transport) M K Aiyappa. The details of the vehicle against which the complaint is made, is cross-checked with the database of the Transport Department and then forwarded to the Regional Transport Office concerned for identification, verfication and enforcement.

“This is the only interactive platform we provide in our website, where public can post complaints of related to transport—from faulty auto-meters to missing mudguards in trucks, to procedural delays in the RTOs. But not many are making use of it as they are unaware of this facility,” Aiyappa adds.

However, other facilities on the website are a huge hit, recording nearly 4,567,843 hits since July. The website provides facilities of downloading applications for learner’s licence and driving licence, renewal of licences and details on procedures to be followed on transactions related to registration of vehicle. It also provides information on international driving permits and driving licences for those holding foreign driving licences.

For those dreading the learner’s licence preliminary test, the website provides a model questionnaire for candidates, along with the schedule of transport adalats and telephone numbers of officers. A set of frequently asked questions answers all queries of road users.
