The floor of the lock up in the newly inaugurated Basavanagudi police station appears clean enough to eat one’s dinner off, and there is enough glass to bring in light.

But working in a brand new building is not the end of it, pointed out City Police Commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh, at the inauguration of the station. “The men inside must also change,” the commissioner said.

Unlike some other police stations in the City, which were renovated, the Basavanagudi police station is completely new.

The older building was demolished to make way for the grey and glass building which came up in its place.

Mr S Mariswamy, Director General of Police, Fire Force, present on the occasion - described the Basavanagudi police station as “one of the best police stations we have in India”.

The whole thing cost Rs 63 lakh to build, and Infosys Technologies foot the bill. Infosys CEO Nandan Nilekani remarked that their company has been associated with the Bangalore police for the past 10 years, having provided them with jeeps, two-wheelers, ambulances, signal lights and now, a police station. Mr Nilekani assured the police that the company would continue to provide support to the police force in various forms.
