Bangaloreans bear brunt of rain gods

Bangalore city, especially the southern part, was at sixes and sevens on Sunday, following heavy rains and gusty winds hitting the city on Saturday evening. As many as 120 electricity poles were brought down and several trees uprooted, leading to black out in many areas.
Uprooted trees and snapped branches and light poles were a common scene in many places. Bangaloreans faced severe hardship without power and water supply on the holiday.
For instance, a JP Nagar 5th phase resident, Mr Jagannath, had to put up with darkness for entire day due to snapping of power line. “We do not have water supply also as the power motor cannot work. Despite repeated requests to Bescom, no action has been taken,” he complained.
Residents on 4th main Basavanagudi remained confined to their houses as an uprooted tree in their lane was precariously leaning on a power line the whole day.
In a minor mishap, TV sets and other electronic goods at a house in C K Garden on Nandidurga Road were damaged due to voltage fluctuation around 6 pm. Residents complained that power supply was erratic for the whole day and finally led to the accident.
According to Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) officials, the worst affected are areas in southern parts like Jayanagar, J P Nagar, B T M Layout, Basavanagudi, Banashankari, Chamarajpet, Srinagar, Tata Silk Farm, Mysore Road, Shantinagar, Srinivas Nagar, Madhavanagar. In Basavanagudi alone, tree branches had fallen in over 35 places, officials said.
There was no power supply the entire day in many places, as neither Bescom nor BMP officials turned up at the spot. “Unless BMP removes trees, we cannot take up restoration work. We, however, have managed to restore nearly 70 poles across the city, Bescom officials said. But for BMP personnel Sunday was a busy day. As many gangmen were on job to evict hawkers near Vijayanagar bus stand, there were not many personnel left.
