`Cobra' squads get into action

they are here: Cobras, the quick reaction squads set up to tackle traffic problems, set out for their duties soon after they were flagged off in Bangalore on Saturday.

BANGALORE: Forty "Cobras" — the quick reaction squads of policemen on motorcycles who will attend to traffic problems — were flagged off by the Commissioner of Police, S. Mariswamy, here on Saturday.

To be stationed in different parts of the city, they would rush to accident spots, provide first aid to victims and shift them to hospitals, Mr. Mariswamy said.

The "Cobras" would also help in clearing traffic jams and take action against traffic violators. Since the "Cobra" teams are on motorcycles, they can access crowded roads, Mr. Mariswamy said.

"The system was adopted from policemen in London," he said.

Four policemen would rush from different directions and regulate traffic faster, he added.

The "Cobras" flagged off on Saturday are part of the 200 to be introduced in phases.
