Residents stage protest seeking good roads

BANGALORE, JAN. 6. Residents of Vivekanandanagar in Srinivasanagar ward staged a demonstration in front of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) head office on Thursday demanding good roads and proper drainage facilities.

The residents, under the banner of Jagrutha Nagarikara Vedike, carried placards and complained that the roads in Vivekanandanagar and adjoining areas had not been asphalted for years.

"Repeated pleas to the BMP to asphalt the roads have been of no use. Though we have been regularly paying property tax for the last 25 years, our money has not been used for the development of our area," the Vedike Convenor, N. Ravi, said.

"It is not that our area has been included in the BMP limits now. We have been residing here for the last 25 years but we neither have a proper under ground drainage system nor good roads. We have never seen our roads asphalted," another resident said.

Pointing out that the number of road accidents in the area had increased, the members said that a delegation of senior citizens from the area had met the BMP Deputy Commissioner (South) on December 1. But this effort too proved to be futile, they said.

They also pointed out that roads in the area did not have name boards and demanded that the BMP should asphalt the roads and put up name boards.

In support of their demands, the residents presented a memorandum to the Mayor, R. Narayanswamy, and the BMP Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam. The Assistant Commissioner, Sriramaiah, received the copies of the memorandum on behalf of the Commissioner.
